Continue our commitment to the "Carbon Neutral" program
Rodriguez Group wants to actively contribute to the protection of the environment. Thus in 2005, Camper & Nicholsons Intl. (CNI) committed itself to the program established by The Carbon Neutral Company (TCNC), whose main objective is the stabilization of the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to a level that prevents irreversible damage to the planet. Currently, carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases are the main culprits of global warming, which have numerous harmful consequences on the environment, including the large increase in extreme climatic phenomena that occurred in the past few years. For this reason, it is essential:
• to reduce the amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere,
• that CO2 emissions are absorbed by natural processes.
To that effect, CNI measured the level of CO2 and other greenhouse gases generated by its operations. The Group then sets itself objectives to reduce emissions at source. The Group is aware that there will always be a level of emissions that can not be reduced, but in future, it will offset them by supporting ecological projects.
In 2007, as in previous years, this commitment to the Carbon Neutral program continued through a collaboration with the organizers of the Monaco Yacht Show, which enabled the event to become Carbon Neutral, and resulted in two new specific projects:
• Northern China wind farm: installation of 36 wind turbines on the Saihanba plateau in Inner Mongolia, enabling to limit the use of coal-fired power plants in the region and reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 138,000 tons over two years ;
• building of ten wind turbines at two Indian sites, in the states of Karnataka and Rajasthan, in order to supply power to 30,000 homes and reduce CO2 emissions by 84,000 tons over the next six years.
These programs will absorb the equivalent emissions generated by CNI operation and the Monaco Yacht Show. To this end, it is worth noting that gasses released by and around a show lasting a few days are approximately equivalent to those released by CNI operations over the full year.
It is satisfying to observe that efforts undertaken over the past few years are starting to bear fruit, by increasing awareness of the magnitude of the issue, both by employees, particularly in the US, and an increasing number of clients. However, there is still a long way to go. As a pioneer of a now popular movement, the Group intends to continue to invest. 2008 projects are already being studied.
